China goes to Afghanistan

07 March 2023

The purpose of the meeting is to invest in the fields of Afghanistan, especially in the field of oil and gas, as well as general cooperation.

A representative of the Chinese company Geo-Jade Petroleum met in Kabul with the Acting Minister of Mines and Oil of the Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) Shahabuddin Delawar.

On January 5, the Minister of Mines and Oil of the Taliban and a representative of the Chinese NC CAPEIC signed the first contract for the operation of oil fields in the north of the country. The area of deposits transferred to the disposal of the Chinese company by the contract is 4.5 thousand km2, and they are in three provinces of the country: Sirpul, Jauzjan and Faryab.

According to the documents, China’s investments will amount from $150 million to $540 million in three years. The term of geological exploration is provided for three years. The extracted oil will have to be processed in Afghanistan. It is worth noting that China is very successful at working with the countries of Central Asia. In particular, it was Chinese companies that were able to enter Turkmenistan’s gas projects. By the way, European business, despite all efforts, failed to reach an agreement with the authorities of this country, although they were very attracted by the prospect of diversifying the supply of grid gas to the EU.
